South Korean crypto trading platform Bithumb has filed a complaint with a country's court in an attempt to recover $69M in taxes, local news outlet The Korea Times reports.

The exchange has reportedly filed a complaint against Korea's National Tax Service (NTS) with the country's Tax Tribunal.

An anonymous source from the exchange said "the platform claims the payment of this additional tax is completely groundless and that it has paid the full amount in order to prepare arguments to defend its position in the tribunal."

However, Choi Hwoa-in, an adviser to the Financial Supervisory Service, the country's financial regulator, has said the exchange's decision seem to be calculated and that its only objective is to recover part or the full amount it has paid.

In November the NTS ordered the crypto trading platform to pay $69M in additional taxes related to the profits of its foreign clients who have invested in Bitcoin. At the time, the exchange said that even though foreign legal entities without permanent registration in South Korea are required to pay a withholding tax, this regulation had not yet been applied to the crypto industry, so it announced it would file a complaint.

The Tax Tribunal has 90 days to decide whether to accept or reject Bithumb's complaint.
