Bertrand Perez, chief operating officer and interim managing director the Libra Association, has just reported that several companies, including some banks, have shown interest in joining the Libra project.
He said yesterday during an interview with CNBC that several "banking and financial institutions" are interested in taking part in the project. Despite not providing any particular name, Bertrand has stressed they are leading companies in their corresponding industries.
None of the 21 founding members of the Libra Association is a bank. While the association had 28 members, a few days ago 7 of them - Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Stripe, eBay, Booking Holdings and MercadoLibre - decided to leave the project as a consequence of the pressure from regulators.
The COO of the project has assured the association expects to have at least 100 members when the stablecoin is launched. However, he has added that pressure from regulators, which believe Facebook's stablecoin could pose a threat to financial stability, could delay the launch of the Libra.
