Ohio Stops Accepting Bitcoin to Pay Taxes

Ohio, which last November became the first US state to allow its companies to pay taxes with bitcoin, has suspended the service.

Ohio Treasurer Robert Sprague has just announced the immediate closure of OhioCrypto.com, a website that allowed state companies to pay their taxes with bitcoin, which was then automatically converted into dollars with the help of blockchain payment provider BitPay.

According to the press release shared yesterday by Sprague, this online bitcoin tax payment platform should have been approved by the Board of Deposits before its official launch, as it is a financial transaction instrument.

He said that "until a formal opinion is issued by the Attorney General, I feel it is prudent to suspend the website," adding he remains committed to the adoption of innovative new technologies and processes.
