Brazil has just become the first country in the world to record birth certificates only on a blockchain, Cointelegraph Brazil reported yesterday.

Newborn Alvaro de Medeiros Mendoça has become the world's first baby whose birth certificate has been recorded only on blockchain, avoiding the registration in the traditional civil registry.

The baby's father, Waldyr Mendonça Junior, has said they have made this decision after American giant IBM and tech company Growth Tech invited them to participate in the project. According to Alvaro's father, the use of blockchain technology has allowed them to complete the registration process in less than 5 minutes.

The birth registration has been done on Growth Tech's Notary Ledgers platform, which provides virtual notary services.

According to Hugo Pierre, the company CEO, the aim of his company is to make the registration process of birth certificates as efficient as possible.

The head of IBM's blockchain department in Latin America, Carlos Rischioto, has said that the registration process consists of 3 stages:

  • "Live Birth Statement" made by the hospital.
  • Creation of a new digital identity by parents on the platform.
  • Sending the information to the notary's office.
