The social network has been paying contractors to transcribe the voice messages from Messenger users, Bloomberg reported yesterday citing several sources familiar with the matter.

Facebook has confirmed it has stop doing so and has explained that it has been paying these contractors in order to find out whether the company's artificial intelligence is correctly interpreting the users' voice messages, which according to Facebook, remained anonymous.

Facebook says only users who accepted to have their chats transcribed have been affected. However, Bloomberg states that they were not informed that their voice messages would be accessed by third parties.

Apple, Amazon and Google have also been involved in similar scandals because of having their users' voice messages reviewed by humans in order to "improve their software."
