85% of All Bitcoin Supply Has Been Mined
Main page News, Bitcoin

According to data provided by monitoring resource Blockchain.com, the total amount of bitcoins mined yesterday reached 85% of the crypto's total supply of 21 millions coins.

As a result, only 3.15 million new coins remain to be mined for the next 120 years.

Even though 17,850,000 bitcoins have been already mined, this does not necessarily mean that they are in circulation, since some of them are simply lost due to the fact that the private keys to access them have been lost. Experts from Chainalysis found in 2017 that the number of lost bitcoins could reach 4 million.

Due to the fact that the number of coins given to miners as a reward for mining a block decreases over time, the remaining amount will only be mined by 2140.

The next bitcoin halving will take place in May 2020. In that moment, the reward miners receive in exchange of each mined block will be reduced to half (from 12.5 BTC to 6.25 BTC), which will supposedly boost bitcoin's price.
