German giant Siemens has just announced it plants to use distributed ledger technology in the transport sector, Forbes reported yesterday.

According to Andreas Kind, director of cybersecurity and blockchain at Siemens Corporate Technology, Siemens is attempting to integrate blockchain technology into carsharing systems through Siemens Mobility, one of the company's subsidiaries.

Carsharing refers to the use or rental of vehicles for transport for a short period of time.

The current systems used on this type of service present several problems, being the most remarkable the one concerning fueling cards. These cards are used to fuel these vehicles, however, they can only be used in some specific stations and are usually stolen and sold on the Internet. This is where blockchain technology could be used, since it allows to bring together third parties who do not trust each other.

This is not the only possible use of blockchain in the transport industry. For example, Siemens introduced during the Bosch 2019 Connected World conference a blockchain-based parking solution.
