Atlantis, the new update of the ethereum classic protocol that will be implemented through a hard fork, will be activated on September 17.

It was originally scheduled for September 15 (Sunday), however, people responsible for the project have increased the number of blocks to postpone it till September 17. This has been done in order to have more participants in the process, since during the week exchanges and developers will be more prepared to deal with any issue that may arise.

The hard fork should take place at block number 8.75 million.

As there are still some months left for the hard fork, the block number is just an estimate of the date, however, the update is expected to happen at around noon UST time on September 17.

Developers are undergoing several tests on the Atlantis update in order to eliminate all potential bugs.

The project has also highlighted that the main priorities of the hard fork are "to develop high-quality blockchain software that preserves the security of the network and to consider the opinions and concerns of the community."

Why it is important

  • Ethereum classic is the result of a hard fork that took place in 2016, when developers who opposed changes in ethereum created this altcoin.
