Chinese leading mining devices maker Bitmain announced on Monday 17 the launch of the Antminer S9 SE, a low-cost version of its most popular mining rig.

The Antminer S9 SE has been developed for individual miners with a tight budget who do not wish to invest too much money in their mining equipment.

The device went on sale yesterday for $350. Bitmain only allows the purchase of 10 devices per order.

The miner works with the SHA-256 algorithm (BTC and BCH) at 16 terahash per second (16TH/s). Its consumption is 1,280 W, reaching a power efficiency of 80 joules per terahash (J/TH).

The first orders are expected to be shipped between July 21-31.

U.S. users will have to pay more than other buyers as a result of Donald Trump's tariffs on Chinese products. They will have to pay an additional 2.6% tax as well as an extra 25% import tax.

Why it is important

  • Bitmain announced in March this year it plans to reapply for IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEx) since its previous application had already expired.
  • The Chinese mining giant also announced in March it intends to launch new ASIC miners before the next bitcoin halving, scheduled for May 2020.
