Popular payment company Square has just hired Steve Lee, a former Google director, as the first member of its cryptocurrency-focused team.

The news was shared yesterday by Square on its official Twitter account, however, it did not reveal the actual role he will play at the company.

Square, the developer of the popular crypto payments app Cash, announced back in March it was hiring staff for a new crypto-focused team. Jack Dorsey, the company CEO, said the team would mainly focus on improving the crypto community rather than pursuing its own interests.

Lee left Google in 2015 after working for the U.S. giant for 8 years.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Lee currently serves as a volunteer director on a bitcoin project.

He is also a Silicon Valley angel investor and holds stakes in companies such as Highlighter, StyleSeat, Anchor Labs, Bytegain, Alto Financial and Halo Neuroscience.
