The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has charged Matjaž Škorjanc, the Slovenian founder of cryptocurrency mining service NiceHash, with racketeering and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud, reports STA.
According to the media, Škorjanc could be sentenced to 50 years in prison.
At press time, the whereabouts of Škorjanc is unknown.
Matjaž Škorjanc is a hacker, believed to have created the Mariposa botnet which is a botnet mainly involved in cyber scamming and denial-of-service attacks. In December 2013 Škorjanc was convicted in Slovenia of "creating a malicious computer program for hacking information systems, assisting in wrongdoings and money laundering."
He was sentenced to 4 years and 10 months imprisonment and fined €3,000.
Earlier iHodl reported that Chainalysis carried out a research that suggests that two groups alone had been responsible for more than half of all hack attacks to cryptocurrency exchanges until today: they had been behind at least 60 percent of all reported crypto exchange hacks.
