The prestigious New York-based news agency Associated Press (AP) has just announced on Twitter that its 2019 style book, a guide for journalists, academics and other writers, includes a special section focused on cryptos.

However, the news has disappointed the crypto community, since the agency recommends not using the term crypto to refer to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum.

According to the guide, a cryptocurrency is "a type of digital money that uses encryption technology to make it secure." The use of the abbreviation crypto, which can be confused with cryptography, should, therefore, be avoided. A cryptocurrency is not the same as a virtual currency, which is used in virtual worlds such as online games.

The guide also includes a series of recommendations regarding the use of capital letters in the name of cryptos. According to the new AP style guidelines, the names of cryptocurrencies should be capitalized when referring to them as a system, but the first letter should be kept lowercase when referring to payment tokens.
