Anti-malware software company Malwarebytes reported yesterday that the number of infected Electrum Bitcoin wallet already exceeds 152,000 after suffering a massive denial of service (DoS) attack on their servers.
Apparently, hackers got access to the users' wallets by making them download a fraudulent update of the wallet that allowed them to steal their funds. However, when the developers of the wallet realized about it and started to protect the users' funds, the attackers changed their strategy and started a denial of service attack.
According to Malwarebytes, the number of infected devices on the network exceeds 152,000, while hackers have already managed to steal about $4.6 million.
The largest concentration of bots can be found in the Asia-Pacific region, Brazil and Peru. In addition, it seems that only computers with Windows as operating system are being infected.
