The popular American tennis player and winner of four olympic gold medals Serena Williams said in Instagram on April 17 that in 2014 she launched an investment business named Serena Ventures and invested in more than 30 companies, including the U.S. crypto exchange Coinbase.

According to the information published on Serena Ventures' site, the market cap of the company's portfolio exceeds $12 billion and the funds are mainly invested in startups in order to foster their development.

Reuters has recently reported that venture capital investment in these type of companies could hit a new record this year.

Why it is important

  • The sport-crypto relationship is not new. For example, in May last year we reported that James Rodriguez was planning to launch his own cryptocurrency, whereas former footballer Michael Owen also has his own crypto.
  • Due to her importance in the world of sport, Serena's investment can be understood as a positive sign for the crypto's adoption.
