According to the announcement, the main idea of the newly created association is to globally promote the use of distributed ledger technology by developing a predictable, transparent, and trust-based global framework.

Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society, says the creation of such massive infrastructure illustrates that blockchain will be "a driving force" for the EU economy in the coming years.

"... through INATBA we will be able to foster an environment that encourages the application of the technology across the EU member states," she added.

Last year, the representatives of two Spanish leading banks BBVA and Banco Santander were invited to an EU blockchain roundtable held in Brussels by Mariya Gabriel.
