One of the largest Japanese online commerce giants, Rakuten Inc., plans to launch its own cryptocurrency exchange called Rakuten Wallet in April this year, states the official press release.

Rakuten Wallet was founded as a currency exchange service on March 30, 2017.

In response to a business improvement order issued by the Kanto Local Finance Bureau on April 25, 2018, the company has reportedly modified its management system, including formulating a business improvement plan and strengthening internal control systems in order to register as a "virtual currency exchange services provider."

"As a virtual currency exchange service provider, Rakuten Wallet will support sound development of the industry, and provide a safe and trustworthy user experience by further strengthening its security and service offerings," notes the announcement.

Last year, Rakuten announced they would be acquiring a Japanese crypto exchange, everybody's bitcoin Inc., for $2.4 million.
