Non-profit organization UNICEF is reportedly in talks with the Kyrgyzstan government to take advantage of blockchain technology to provide Internet access to all schools in the country.

"We are at the early stages of exploring a blockchain-based solution for the Project Connect initiative in Kyrgyzstan where the government is working with UNICEF and the private sector to connect every school in the country to the Internet and provide access to information and opportunity to all young people," said Munir Mammadzade, deputy representative of UNICEF in Kyrgyzstan.

The project is part of a broader initiative known as Project Connect, with which UNICEF is trying to engage more than 1,500 local schools in Kyrgyzstan and explore the possibility of using a blockchain-based solution to monitor and improve Internet connectivity.

So far, the project has managed to assess the Internet connectivity of about 1,560 schools in the country, half of which have either no access to the Internet or simply no data on the matter.

Why it is important

  • This is not the first time UNICEF is involved in the blockchain industry. For example, in December last year it was reported that the non-profit organization had decided to invest in 6 blockchain startups, whereas UNICEF France announced in September it was accepting donations in Bitcoin and Ethereum.
