According to a study published yesterday by the tech company Cisco, university campuses are one of the favorite destinations for crypto miners due to the fact that their students enjoy free electricity.
The research has been conducted with the help of the security product Cisco Umbrella, which analyzes network connections to detect malicious activity, including crypto mining.
According to the report, university campuses are the second favorite destination for crypto miners (22%), only behind the energy and utilities sector, with about 34%.
Austin McBride, one of the researched that has taken part in the study, you simply "leave [the mining rig] running in your dorm room for four years, you walk out of college with a big chunk of change". This allows students to make some money without spending a single $ in electricity.
