Telegram’s cryptocurrency may pose threat to Iran’s national economy, according to Tehran Times.

Secretary of Criminal Content Definition Task Force, Javad Javidnia, claims any cooperation with Telegram’s crypto Gram in Iran will be classified as "a disruption to national economy."

"One of the most important factors in banning Telegram was a sense of serious economic threat from its activities, which was unfortunately marginalized and neglected due to the fuss in the political atmosphere of the country," Javidnia said.

Information about the launch of the Telegram Open Network (TON) project appeared for the first time at the end of 2017. Back then, the company raised more than $1.7 billion during the closed ICO round, in which 200 investors participated.

In July, Telegram Passport was announced — the first stage of TON implementation. Thanks to Telegram Passport, users will be able to upload their documents in order to then log in an unlimited number of times on various websites and services that require identity verification.

These data will later be moved to a single distribution cloud, and their owners will be able to use the Gram cryptocurrency, which will become a means of payment within TON.

Earlier this year, the Judiciary issued an order to ban Telegram to protect national security.
