Malware researcher and cybersecurity specialist Lukas Stefanko claimed that he found four fake cryptocurrency wallets on the Google Play Store that were trying to steal users personal data, according to a recently published blog post by Lukas.
Researcher has diversified fake apps into two different categories: phishing wallets which aim is to steal user's private key and wallet passwords and fake wallets that tries to steal users’ funds by displaying the attacker’s public address with no user access to the private key.
Founded applications were posing as cryptocurrency wallets for NEO, tether and an extension for accessing ethereum, MetaMask. As it was also stated, some of them possibly were created by the same group of attackers and had over 1,000 installs.
This news followed recent Twitter hacks of google’s G Suite and retail giant Target in which scammers illegally promoted fake bitcoin giveaway in order to steal users’ money. Thus, it is considered that cryptocurrency hacks and scams are only gaining momentum.
