The largest Chinese retailer JD.com has launched a research blockchain lab with the Ying Wu College of Computing at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and the Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the announcement states.

It’s reported that the joint lab will focus “on solving efficiency and stability challenges that are the most significant bottlenecks restricting the wider application of blockchain.”

The new project will be led by Dr. Jian Pei. Commenting on the announcement, Dr. Pei stated:

“JD.com is a pioneer in the utilization of blockchain technology, and we are dedicated to exploring its potential by investing in the growth of the blockchain ecosystem through key strategic and research partnerships.”

Earlier in October, the Chinese tech company announced it would open a research institute called Smart City in order to research the issue of creating "smart cities" with the use of blockchain and artificial intelligence.
