Cryptohackers held The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations’ (FSIN) data hostage, making the federation pay a ransom of $20,000 in bitcoin.

FSIN, which is a federation that is committed to upkeep and promote the Treaty promises of more than a century ago, had to pay an unknown crypto hacker a handsome ransom after their internal files, as well as their email system, was hacked and became inaccessible.

“Files on residential school survivors, youth athletes, and their coaches, internal land claims” were hacked and acquired, as well as staff personal information such as social security numbers and health claims were accessed.

During a private meeting of the executives, the decision was made to pay the ransom in bitcoin. The data is once again accessible for the federation, however, FSIN suspects that the illwisher might have tampered with some of it.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

  • Such incidents put crypto in a bad light, as the high-anonymity of crypto allows the hackers to get away with their criminal actions.
  • Incidents, such as this one, will surely make everyone think twice as hard about their digital security.
