California Governor Jerry Brown has signed Assembly Bill 2658 to further examine the use of Blockchain. California joins the growing list of states officially learning distributed register technology.

The new law defines the Blockchain as “mathematically secured, chronological and decentralized ledger or database”. According to the law, the Secretary of the Government Operations Agency should convene a Blockchain working group to July 1, 2019.

The working group should include experts from the technology industry and non-technology industries, as well as individuals with experience in the law, privacy, and consumer protection areas.

The group must provide a report on the potential risks and benefits of Blockchain technology by January 1, 2020, and evaluate best practices for implementing Blockchain in the interests of California.
