Retail corporation Walmart has joined forces with the technological giant IBM to solve problems of food safety. The company also announced that all of its vegetable suppliers should send their data to a common blockchain-based tracking system by September 2019.
Walmart reminded suppliers of the bacteria outbreak that occurred at the end of March in a salad and affected more than 200 people. After the outbreak, Walmart decided to introduce a blockchain technology that has been tested over the past 18 months. The technology that the company intends to introduce will allow to scan the packaging and find out where the food was produced. Thus, the blockchain will be able to secure buyers.
Walmart also explains that with the use of blockchain the time taken to track the product from the source to the Walmart store will be reduced to a few seconds, compared to the old tracking method that took days and sometimes weeks.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
- Walmart and IBM entered into a partnership in 2017 to digitize the food supply chain process. The retail giant uses IBM Food Trust Solution, a blockchain-based product that has been specifically designed to track food.
- The new food tracking program will increase transparency in the food system. Thus, customers can trust the company more, representatives of Walmart are sure.
