Crypto enthusiasts who like to play board games should be very happy. The word ‘bitcoin’ is now added to the official Scrabble dictionary, although it’s worth only 11 points.
The official dictionary of players Scorble Players Merriam-Webster (OSPD) is periodically updated with new words and terms. This time twerk, emoji, facepalm, beatdown, zomboid, andpuggle were given such an honor. To the great excitement of crypto fans, bitcoin joined the new words.
OSPD is a reference manual, first published in 1979. It is used in official Scrabble tournaments throughout North America to determine that such a word does exist and players can use it. Usually, players cannot use new or narrowly specialized terms. So, before the recent update of the dictionary, crypto terms did not apply to the commonly used ones.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
- Such events mean that blockchain and cryptocurrencies are increasingly entering our lives and are no longer a privilege for niche communities.
- Cryptocurrencies are gradually becoming a part of popular culture. Increasingly, heroes of TV series speak about bitcoin, bitcoin glyphs were included in the Apple’s Shortcuts app. The first cryptocurrency even hit the new Eminem album.
