It has been reported that Aragon, an autonomous society in the northeast of Spain, is to be the first community in Spain to implement blockchain in its public administration.

Spain is quite a multinational countries, so for the sake of the different people of Spain 17 autonomous communities were established.

The counselor of Finance and Public administration of Aragon, Fernando Gimeno, has finalized a contract with a national blockchain ecosystem, Alastria, that creates blockchain-instruments for implementation if various fields. The deal will result in the Aragon being the first of the Spanish autonomous communities to use blockchain services at a state level.

Gimeno believes that this contract will show the world the strength of blockchain and how it can be applied. In his opinion, blockchain is the "fundamental" technology of the future, especially in the administration sector, that has the power to increase the transparency and effectiveness of the administration. And a more efficient and transparent governmental institution could attract more investments and businesses. To master this newly implemented technology, the administration workers are taught how to operate it.

Aragon isn’t the only one interested in the technology of the future, their Catalonian neighbors have also expressed an interest in blockchain. The Department of Digital Policies aims to find a means of implementing blockchain by the end of the year.

Since the move towards blockchain in public administration is a global phenomenon, a party in the Spanish government has toyed with the idea of giving tax cuts to firms implementing blockchain.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

  1. Ways of using blockchain in state-related affairs are considered worldwide. Aragon is among the first to move from theory to practice paving the path for others to follow.
  2. Blockchain has the potential to benefit the public administration sector by creating an air of transparency, which leads to trust, an important thing for institutions of power to hold.
