Marvel comics company is considering to file a lawsuit against the cryptocurrency startup, which uses the name of the fictional country Wakanda from the “Black Panther” comics and movie, for its own name.
Marvel Characters, a subsidiary of the comic giant, has requested some more time from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to decide on a possible protest against the registration of Wakanda Wine Fest and Wacoinda trademarks. The final decision should be made by November 14.
Both trademarks belong to Wilsondom LLC, a company that plans to provide financial and educational services in the field of cryptocurrency. For example, the Wacoinda trademark can be used as part of initiatives to increase the financial literacy and accessibility of financial services in the African American community.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
- Wacoinda is not the first crypto project inspired by the "Black Panther" movie. In June, African singer Akon announced the launch of the Akoin cryptocurrency and the desire to embody Wakanda in real life.
- Marvel also doesn’t ignore cryptocurrencies. The mention of digital assets can be found in the comic book "Wolverine Hunt - Adamantium Agenda #1". In the Wolverine comic, New York is rescued from a bomb. Also in the course of the story appear Iron Man, Spider-Man, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Bitcoin in the comic is described as a universal tool, often used by robots. At a certain point, Tony Stark must make a payment, and he decides to resort to the help of the cryptocurrency guided by the peculiarities of the situation.
