IBM Corporation (NYSE: IBM) will become a technology partner of the Australian Government in projects requiring blockchain applications. The parties signed a five-year cooperation agreement worth one billion Australian dollars ($740ml).

Why it is important

  1. Australia is planning to become one of the leading e-governments by 2025 and the collaboration with IBM will help the country’s authorities to create a system which will allow its citizens and businesses to gain access to user-oriented, easy-to-understand trustable services.
  2. Australian authorities will be able to implement such IBM’s solutions as Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, and the powers of quantum computers allowing agencies to speed up the use of digital services that are smarter and more integrated for its potential users.

The tech giant will provide automation services to the government departments and help to implement blockchain technology into the work of governmental services.

IBM will also create platforms for the protection and storage of data related to the Australian citizens. The country's authorities believe that IBM’s assistance will save taxpayers' money in the amount of about 100 million Australian dollars ($73ml).

According to the head of IBM Asia Pacific- Harriet Green, the company is going to work with specialists from Australia to develop and implement new projects.

Earlier in May, it was announced that IBM plans to employ 1800 specialists from France within the next couple of years.
