The Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), organization which supports opposition journalists announced today that they start accepting cryptocurrency donations. According to the announcement on their web page, the Foundation is ready to receive donations in Bitcoin (Bitcoin: BITCOIN), Bitcoin Cash (EXANTE: BCH.EXANTE), Ethereum (BITFINEX: ETH/USD.BITFINEX), Litecoin (BITFINEX: LTC/USD.BITFINEX) and Zcash (EXANTE: ZEC.EXANTE).

However, if somebody would like to donate in other cryptocurrencies, not listed above, FPF is ready to find a way to accept it as well. Currently, the organization has digital wallets for direct donations. However, their ultimate goal is to use a payment processor to automatically convert donations into a fiat currency.

“We plan to add more cryptocurrencies soon, including support for donating to a shielded Zcash address” - the announcement says.

According to Trevor Timm, Foundation’s executive director, this step is a “natural fit” for the organization, whose goal is to support journalists reporting problems within governments.

"We live in a time when journalists around the world have never been at greater risk of surveillance, arrest, or worse, and it's incredibly important that supporters of press freedom have all the available options to them to fight back," he said in the interview to Coindesk.

FPF already has received its first big donation in crypto. Blockchain startup Mainframe, which is developing a network for censorship-resistant communication and decentralized applications donated 1 000 ETH (around $498 000).
