One of the the American premier transportation companies, Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) has announced it has joined the Blockchain in Transport Alliance (BiTA).

According to the press release of the consortium, the company will become a participant of the project for logistics companies that transfer their work to blockchain-technology.

Vice President of Information Technology and CIO of Norfolk Southern, Fred Ehlers, said that membership will help the company to “identify opportunities where blockchain can be used to improve the transportation supply-chain for our customers.”

The statement of the vice-president was confirmed by the head of BiTA Chris Burruss:

"Norfolk Southern brings a level of intermodal and rail expertise to the Alliance that will benefit all members and the industry as a whole as we move toward a common framework. We look forward to engaging with them as we move forward.”

Norfolk Southern joins companies such as Burlington Northern Santa Fe, which is wholly owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway. The company joined the Alliance in February followed by GE Transportation, which became a member of BiTA in March. Also in February of this year, FedEx joined the Alliance to explore potential blockchain applications alongside other partners within the logistics industry.
