Main page News, TON

Telegram took the first step towards creating its own blockchain-platform TON. The company launched a personal data storage service Telegram Passport in closed test mode, Vedomosti reported.

Why it is important

  • According to experts, Telegram Passport has enough competitors that allow users to authorize on third-party sites via Google, Facebook or Windows Live. However, new service can circumvent them providing greater privacy and data security. This will be a reputational advantage.
  • The developers promise that TON ecosystem will have everything from content to various services, products and features. Internally, TON will handle Gram, a cryptocurrency, which will become the main currency of the domestic economy. The presumption is that hundreds of millions people around the world will use Gram.

The new service will avoid anonymity of cryptocurrency payments, which now worries regulators around the world, explains Alexander Filatov, a partner of SP Capital, investment and consulting company that has invested in TON and helped Telegram attract other investors.

Telegram is negotiating with a number of companies that it intends to attract as partners for the project. Qiwi payment system has already received access to new technology.

Telegram Passport will be able to collect passport and driver's license data, store utility bills, bank account certificates and other documents. At the same time, only the user will have access to the documents. This is stated on a closed page of telegram.org website, where the content was reviewed by Vedomosti.

It was in 2017 when Pavel Durov’s announces his plans to launch his own blockchain-platform Telegram Open Network (TON) and the cryptocurrency Gram.
