Which US states are most interested in cryptocurrencies? RewardExpert analyzed search traffic and geographical data to find out.

Researchers parsed Google Trends’ traffic for five keywords: “cryptocurrency”, “Bitcoin”, “Ethereum”, “Ripple”, and “Litecoin” to determine the states most interested in cryptocurrencies.

Theyalso used GIS data containing the locations of all known establishments that accept Bitcoin as a form of payment, as well as Bitcoin ATMs, to find states where customers can use cryptocurrencies for purchases and other transactions.

California tops the ranking, which comes as no surprise, as it is one of themajor technology hubs in the US. The state has over 500 establishments where Bitcoin is an accepted form of payment. The term “cryptocurrency” scores 93 on Google Trends’ 100-point scale. Specific currencies, such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum and Ripple, score 98, 92, 97 and 85 respectively.

There are also no surprises in second place, which is occupied by New York. Local residents’ interest in Litecoin and Ethereum helps boost New York’s overall trends score for interest in specific currencies to 96.25 of 100.

New Jersey falls behind New York by a fraction of a percentage point, coming in third overall.

Washington and Alaska occupy the last two slots in the top-5. Notably, Ethereum scores a perfect 100 in Washington. Alaska had the highest keyword search volume for the term “cryptocurrency” of any state during research time frame.

The ranking then goes to Nevada, Florida, Utah,Connecticut, with the last place going to Colorado. The researchers associatethe state’s high interest in cryptocurrencies with its’ rapidly growing technology industry, high level of education and libertarian-inclinedpopulation.

Washington, D.C. tops this list, with 4.49 ATMs per million residents,and 2.39 establishments per million residents that accept Bitcoin as a form of payment.

New Hampshire is in second place, with 62 organizations accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment statewide. Cryptocurrencies can be used to pay for retail purchases, food, and travel and lodging (in select locations).

Georgia comes in third - the state has the most locations where you can automatically convert cryptocurrency into cash. There are also 24 Bitcoin ATMs available statewide.

Nevada, Colorado and Kansas follow suit, with New York coming in seventh with a total of 23 ATMs statewide.

Michigan and Missouri are 8th and 9th, with Oregon rounding off the top-10 list. The state has only one Bitcoin ATM atpresent, but there are a substantial number of retail, food/grocery, and othere stablishments that accept it as payment.
