Popular budget airline AirAsia has confirmed plans to launch proprietary cryptocurrency called BigCoin, Nikkei Asia Review reported.
Starting in April, ticket prices will be quoted on the group's website in conventional currencies as well as in BigCoin.
“It will be possible to pay for seat upgrades, in-flight meals and other services using the digital currency within three to six months, ” AirAsia founder and chief executive Tony Fernandes.
BigCoin will see its own ICO, which would allow the coins to be bought at exchanges.
Fernandes expects BigCoin to be accepted by third-party businesses in the future.
In January, the company launched the mobile wallet service BigPay, which lets passengers buy food and drink on board by smartphone using onboard Wi-Fi. Fernandes also wants to use the mobile platform to eventually enter the money remittance and lending businesses.
