With a market cap of $231.8 billion, or around 36.1 percent of the total value of all cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin's (TIKER: BTC.EXANTE) dominance of the cryptocurrency market fell to its lowest level ever today, CNBC reported.

By contrast, at the start of 2017, its market share stood at over 80 percent.

Ripple and Ethereum (TIKER: ETH/USD.BITFINEX) now comprise about 14% each. Bitcoin cash, an offshoot of bitcoin, makes up 7%.

This shift in the market position of Bitcoins has happened due to the pullback in price and because the returns in altcoins have been much higher. While Bitcoins offered a return of about 1300% in 2017, Ripple recorded a growth of 36000%. Ethereum too, was quite successful with a growth of over 9100%.
