Google's autonomous vehicle unit Waymo has announced it is developing a self-driving truck.

"We're taking our eight years of experience in building self-driving hardware and software and conducting a technical exploration into how our technology can integrate into a truck," a Waymo spokesperson said in a statement.

While the race to develop a self-driving car has intensified exponentially in recent years there are fewer companies actively working on autonomous trucks.

Uber is already in the race through its Otto unit, which it acquired last year.

Tesla is also developing a self-driving electric truck, which it plans to unveil in September.
