Prior to this, the attackers moved funds in April 2021 following the listing of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase on the US NASDAQ.

In 2016, some hackers stole nearly 120,000 BTC from Bitfinex. In February 2019, the US authorities returned more than 27,000 BTC to the exchange, which were converted to US dollars and paid out to RRT (Recovery Right Token) token holders.

Last year, Bitfinex reported it had made little progress in identifying and tracking down the attackers. Representatives of the exchange said they would pay a $400 million reward for any help in catching the attackers and returning the funds.
