Colombian national team and Bayern Munich football player James Rodriguez announced his collaboration with blockchain platform SelfSell to launch his own cryptocurrency, the JR10 Token, on May 27.
JR10 Token will be available for pre-purchase through SelfSell, making Rodriguez the first active international soccer player to enter the blockchain through his own cryptocurrency.
SelfSell founder Li Yuan believes that by using blockchain, everyone can be both creators and beneficiaries of value.
Li added that JR10 Token can be used in a variety of ways for the benefit of sponsors, media, soccer clubs and other relevant stakeholders, and become a new growth engine for the global soccer market.
Earlier another football player has announced a plan to launch his own cryptocurrency. Former Liverpool and Manchester United player Michael Owen is about to create "OWN" - token which will allow to purchase merchandise.
