The popularity is explained by the fact that many large exchanges such as bitFlyer and Binance are based in Japan.
As for Ethereum (TIKER: ETH/USD.BITFINEX), the ETH/USD pair is the most popular with a 32 % trading volume. Bitcoin comes second with 30%.
