The upcoming hard fork of the Ethereum (ETH) network is postponed until next week due to a newly found critical vulnerability, according to the hard fork coordinator Afri Schoedon announcement.
According to the official statement, the upcoming Constantinople Upgrade for the Ethereum network introduces cheaper gas cost for certain operations on smart contracts, which may pose reentrancy attacks.
"We will decided further steps on Friday in the all-core-devs call. For now it will not happen this week. Stay tuned for instructions," wrote Afri Schoedon.
The vulnerability was located by crypto-focused audit agency ChainSecurity.
As it states, the vulnerability allows an attacker to steal funds from a smart contract with the help of frequent funds request operation while feeding it false data about the actual ETH balance.
At press time, ETH is trading at $120.69 (-6.42%), according to CoinMarketCap.
Earlier it was expected, that the upcoming hard fork will be implemented between 14 and 18 January 2019.
