G20 calls for clearer pathways for digital asset innovation. G20 finance ministers and central bank governors have called for clearer regulatory frameworks to support digital asset innovation while maintaining financial stability. Following a two-day meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, the officials said responsible regulatory and supervisory frameworks should create "clear pathways" for digital financial and digital asset innovation. The G20 also highlighted the potential of digital financial innovation to support broad-based economic growth and private-sector innovation. The officials said they expect upcoming Financial Stability Board findings on the cross-border implications of global stablecoin arrangements, including data availability and potential regulatory challenges.
CFTC seeks dismissal of CME lawsuit over crypto perpetual futures. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has asked a US federal court to dismiss CME Group’s lawsuit challenging the agency’s approval of cryptocurrency perpetual futures, as reported by The Block on Tuesday. The CFTC described CME’s case as "much ado about nothing", arguing that the exchange had failed to show a valid competitive injury. CME sued the CFTC on 18 June over the approval of Kalshi’s Bitcoin perpetual futures contract and the decision to allow other designated contract markets to list similar products. CME argues the contracts should be classified as swaps under the Commodity Exchange Act and Dodd-Frank.
Ireland excludes crypto from planned retail investment scheme. Ireland plans to exclude crypto assets and derivatives from a new tax-advantaged investment account aimed at encouraging retail investing. The Department of Finance said on Monday that the accounts will cover stocks, bonds, exchange-traded funds and other investment funds, but not crypto or derivatives, which it classified as "highly complex and risky” products. The accounts are expected to become available to Irish residents in 2027, although no specific launch date has been announced. The government will set the tax rate and tax-free threshold in Budget 2027. The decision keeps digital assets outside a framework designed to make investing more accessible and tax-efficient, as Ireland continues to strengthen its oversight of the crypto sector.

Crypto industry participants are urging the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to avoid blanket restrictions on "novel" exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and assess each product based on its individual risk profile. Venture capital firm a16z called on the SEC to evaluate novel ETFs according to their underlying characteristics, coordinate fund registration and exchange-listing reviews and provide more predictable timelines. Digital asset manager Grayscale and the Crypto Council for Innovation (CCI) also backed optional confidential pre-filing processes. All three groups opposed changes to existing investment company classifications that could automatically bring funds holding non-securities under the Investment Company Act.
