Exchanges urge SEC to stop crypto firms from bypassing securities laws

A coalition of global stock exchanges has voiced opposition to the SEC's potential plan to grant crypto companies a special regulatory exemption, as noted by Reuters on Wednesday. The World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), which includes Nasdaq and Deutsche Börse, argued in a formal letter that allowing unregistered crypto companies to sell tokenized shares would create serious risks for the market and undermine decades of established protections for investors.

The Financial Services Agency (FSA) of Japan is drafting a law that would legally require crypto exchange platforms to maintain reserves to cover obligations to customers, according to a Nikkei Asia report. This measure aims to strengthen investor protection by ensuring that exchange platforms have the necessary capital to compensate users in the event of hacking or operational failures.

Bitcoin mining is making a covert return to China despite a four-year ban, as miners take advantage of cheap electricity and the expansion of data centers in energy-rich provinces, as reported by Reuters on Monday. China, once the world's dominant crypto mining hub before Beijing's 2021 ban on financial and energy stability grounds, has quietly returned to third place globally, with a 14% market share at the end of October, according to Hashrate Index.

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has officially classified cryptocurrencies and stablecoins as a new risk to financial stability. In its second financial stability report for 2025, the central bank noted the rapid expansion of the digital asset market in the country, highlighting that the three largest crypto exchange platforms have accumulated 7.8 million users.
