The U.S. tech giant Google announced in its official Chromium Blog the decision to ban the mining extension for Chrome.

"Over the past few months, there has been a rise in malicious extensions that appear to provide useful functionality on the surface, while embedding hidden cryptocurrency mining scripts that run in the background without the user’s consent. These mining scripts often consume significant CPU resources, and can severely impact system performance and power consumption." said James Wagner, Extensions Platform Product Manager in the company's blog post.

Google said that in July it will start removing existing browser extensions that facilitate mining. Other blockchain-related extensions will still allowed.

Google previously permitted Chrome mining extensions as long as they were solely dedicated to mining and explicitly informed users of their purpose.

The mining extension ban comes less than a month after Google announced its plans to ban cryptocurrency-related advertisements.
