What's happened?
At the 35th Chaos Computer Club Conference in Leipzig, Germany, IT security analysts Thomas Roth, Josh Datko, and Dmitry Nedospasov presented several types of attacks against Ledger Hardware Wallet.
Wait. What is Ledger Wallet?
Ledger Wallet is a hardware device that enables offline cryptocurrency storing and perform transactions.
OK. So.. they succeeded to hack crypto wallet?
It depends on what exactly do you mean by saying "hack." Darko showed that using simple antennae you can verify so-called "bad transactions." However, this method requires not only one antenna. For instance, malefactor should know where is the victim lives, hack victim’s computer and be notified when the Ledger is attached to exactly that computer.
It’s kinda complicated :/
You're not the only one who thinks that way. Ledger made an official statement, according to which, Roth, Datko, and Nedospasov didn’t succeed to extract any seed nor PIN on a stolen device.
"Every sensitive assets stored on the Secure Element remain secure," Ledger said in the statement.
